Maha Shiva Ratri

Maha Shiva Ratri is said to be one of the most auspicious occasions to perform the worship of Bhagawan Shiva,

the God who destroys the darkness of ignorance, and the One who brings peace, prosperity, and happiness to all.

Maha Shiva Ratri means… “The great night of Lord Shiva:” a night spent in the adoration and honoring of the Great

Lord of all Lords.  It is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month Phalgun.

There are many incidents told about the greatness of Maha Shiva Ratri. Once a hunter was roaming the forests

in search of animals.  Overtaken by the darkness of night, he was unable to return home.  He climbed a Bael tree

for shelter.  Tormented by hunger and thirst, he was kept awake throughout the night, shedding profuse tears

as he thought of his family who were hungry and anxiously awaiting upon his return.  To pass the night, he engaged

himself in picking leaves off the Bael tree and throwing it down.  The whole night went on as such.  Lord Shiva, upon

seeing the compassion of the hunter, was pleased with his fasting and offering of the Bael leaves, thus granted him

 “Moksha”, or liberation.
