The month of Phalgun arrives with the promise of warmer days - Spring being the season of rejuvenation and rebirth.
It brings the changing of the earth’s dull winter appearance for the fresh blue of the March skies, the bright colors of new
blossoms and the brilliance of the sun bathing everything with its red-gold hues.
Phagwa or (Holi) is all about celebrating the true spirit of Spring. It ranks as one of the most colorful festivities; it is a celebration
of joy and hope. Phagwa provides a refreshing interval from the mundane norms as people from all walks of life enjoy themselves
as they smear colored powder and colored water (abeer) on each other all in the spirit of fun, as chowtal singing adds to the merriment.
Colors and music denote energy – the pulse and vitality of life.
Phagwa is also associated with the story of Prahalad. The story centers around the arrogant and demonic King Hiranyakashipu who
resents his son Prahalad worshipping Lord Vishnu instead of him. The king attempts to kill his son but fails each time. Finally, Holika,
the king's sister, who is said to be immune to burning, sits with Prahalad in a huge fire in another attempt to kill the boy. However, while
his aunt perishes in the flames, Prahalad emerges unscathed through Lord Vishnu’s grace.
The religious significance of Phagwa is to mark the burning of self-conceit, selfishness, greed, lust, hatred, in fact all the undesirable
demonic tendencies, propensities, thoughts and behaviors. It is the victory of righteousness over evil that can be achieved by the devotees
of Lord Vishnu in the face of trials and difficulties.
May the message of Phagwa improve our lives so that we can be better individuals on our path to attaining Moksha. Always keep ablaze the l
ight of God-love shining in your hearts.
