Pitri Paksh

The fortnight dedicated to the honoring of our ancestors or “Pitri Paksh”, is observed during the month of Ashvin (September-October).

The Hindu tradition has allocated a special period for making offerings to God on behalf of our departed ancestors. During this special period,

we remember the departed souls and pray for their welfare.

Navaratri

The festival of Navaratri, which is a period of nine days and nine nights, is dedicated to the worship of the Supreme Mother, or the feminine

aspect of God.  During this period devotees purify themselves and re-dedicate their lives to the Divine Mother.  The nine days and nights are divided

into three sections, each consisting of three days.

The first three days are dedicated to Mother Durga, the dispeller of ignorance and evil.  We offer our love and affection to the Divine Mother in this

form and humbly pray that she will destroy the darkness in our minds such as hate, greed, anger, jealousy, lust, violence, and pride.

The second three days are dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and happiness.  After purifying ourselves in the first three days,

we ask Mother Lakshmi to bestow upon us divine, virtuous qualities such as patience, love, kindness compassion and humility.  Whosoever contemplates

on her, gains the wealth of good fortune and eternal bliss.

The last three days are dedicated to Saraswati Devi, the great Goddess of learning.  We surrender at her lotus-like feet and pray that she will grant us

the gift of knowledge and understanding so that we may know truth from untruth and right from wrong.

Some names of the Divine Mother are:

Durga -  Destroyer of the wicked

Parvati – Mother who dwells

               on the mountain

Lakshmi-  Bestower of prosperity

Saraswati – Giver of knowledge

Bhavani – Mother of the Universe

May the blessings of the Divine Mother be with all of us!!
